But having read Jessica’s previous book The Farm I knew I needed to read The Burn.

Has it happens it wasn’t a ferocious start, more a slow burn. Took me a while to get into the story,

Four friends, Rhett, Carmen, Dan and his partner Eleni find themselves trekking through dense forest. Dan has organised an off grid trip for them in two cabins deep in the forest, but omitted to tell his friends the full extent of how off grid they would be.
But this camping trip is about to take a deadly turn..

The story takes us through the lives of these four characters as they confide in each other about their guilt, loves and loss.

For Carmen the story runs on two timelines as we learn about her sister Anna and why being off grid haunts her. This trip becomes a test of her strength and fears as she battles to survive..

The skill of the author weaving two timelines for one character without really giving her centre stage and still managing to leave air for her three friends and their stories alongside very graphic and vivid descriptions of forest fires, is nothing short of genius.

Visually this is a feast, set on the far south coastline of NSW near the town of Eden, Jessica’s graphic descriptions brought the area powerfully to life. .

At first I struggled with the timelines, wanting to just read the current day but as the book progresses it becomes clear why the early story is important.

Has the two timelines start to mirror each other a race against nature shows the strength of a single human.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing an advance copy of this outstanding book.

The Blurb

A nerve-shredding psychological thriller that asks who and what we cling to when everything starts to burn, from the bestselling author of The Farm

2030. Devastating bushfires have plunged Australia into lockdown. When stay-at-home orders lift, Carmen isn’t relieved. After months apart, Eleni says they need an unplugged week away a chance for escape and reconnection, laughter and shared history.

But the trip isn’t what Carmen expects. Stuck in isolated cabins in dense national parkland, secrets spill out, new ideals are challenged and bitter arguments erupt. On the final morning, new fires are racing towards them, forcing the group to find another way out. But how, when the friends no longer trust each other with their lives?

Tense, timely, propulsive and unnerving, The Burn examines the myths we believe about ourselves and the people we love.
