Review:
Thank you to Kaybee for allowing me a copy to review. This story uses one parent’s control to undermine the otherWhilst magic is mentioned throughout its use is explained in logical terms for those who don’t believe it, it can be dismissed as circumstance or coincidence.
Lila is a wise, patient, and understanding grandparent. Her daughter, Kandy, who has lost her faith in magic, is not overly impressed with her mother’s wild ideas that she is instilling while homeschooling her two children Malakye and Corwin.
Clayton the father, hadn’t shown much interest in his kids until recently and doesn’t pay child support, leaving the upbringing entirely to their mother and grandmother. While visiting their father and his girlfriend Tina he learns about their schooling and advocates for them to attend mainstream school.
This ultimately backfires on him.
A blended family. Grandmother, her daughter, ex husband two children and husbands girlfriend A unusual mix of a gran witch homeschooling her grandchildren in old methods of good magic whilst their father wants them to embrace technology and learn how to be successful in the modern world.
13yr old Malakye is becoming the rebellious teen where the modern world is more exciting than spells and her father’s gift of a Fitbit much more fun. She is a great character though easily manipulated by the “shiny” modern things of today and sees her father as cool. Her father has a temper but this does not deter Malakye, who can be defiant but still prefers her father to her mum and grand, whom she views as outdated and out of touch.
Corwin is still young and impressible, carefree he listens hard to his grandmother’s teachings and believes he has found his spirit animal. The stag. This story is really Corwin’s, he is central to the plot.
Though the book is long the headings and chapters are short and clear making it easy reading.
About:
The ravens are circling … twenty-five of them. The number of the ancestors. They bring a warning.
For Corwin, life is full of wonder. Homeschooling with Grand, he learns the ancient magic hidden within nature – that science, history, art and the natural world are all connected. Through the mysterious wyrd, he shares a powerful bond with a majestic stag who roams Braeburn Wild Woods.
But Corwin’s father believes only in technology, machines and Artificial Intelligence. As two worlds collide – magic and technology, nature and control – Corwin must choose where he belongs.
Desperate to protect what he loves, Corwin casts a spell with the help of his stag. But he forgets one of the most important rules of magic:
Every spell has consequences.
