About
It is June 21st, the longest day of the year, and new mother Camilla’s life is about to change forever. After months of maternity leave, she will drop her infant daughter off at daycare for the first time and return to her job as a literary agent. Finally. But, when she wakes, her husband Luke isn’t there, and in his place is a cryptic note.
Then it starts. Breaking news: there’s a hostage situation developing in London. The police arrive, and tell her Luke is involved. But he isn’t a hostage. Her husband—doting father, eternal optimist—is the gunman.
What she does next is crucial. Because only she knows what the note he left behind that morning says…
Review
Famous last words.
I’m writing this in snapshots because for those who’ve not read it, there is so much I would love to say about this book that would spoilt the story for you.
The hook for me was the first chapter. I was rolling from the moment it transpired Cam’s ordinary, doesn’t take risks or harm anyone husband had taken hostages with the escalation continuing to mount.
Cam’s feelings of confusion, disbelief, and paranoia grow, at times seeming out of proportion.
I’d worked out quite early who the manuscript was really from, and got a little frustrated with Cam for not reading it all in one sitting, something she was renowned for. I felt like shouting at the pages, Cam read the manuscript..
The chapters, though fleeting of the surveillance, really pricked at my intrigue, and over time, I started to get suspicious of who was behind them. My suspicions proved to be right.
The last couple of chapters gave food for thought, not a neat wrap-up, well thought through, and how, in reality, things would be.
And to the book Luke wrote.. to actually read it was something I hadn’t expected, brilliantly clever writing by the author.
This is ultimately a love story about a couple who truly know each other.
